How to secure my bonsai plant on my outside window sill? was created by BoomitsAJ

Hi all,

I'm looking to get my very first bonsai tree after doing a decent amount of research. I'll be getting a Chinese Elm from Herons (UK) but I have a quick question about keeping it outside.

I plan on keeping the tree on the outside window sill of my main room (south facing). The window sill is about 3 feet long and 1 foot wide. My question is: will the tree be safe on this window sill or is it at risk of being blown off by high winds?

To give some context, I live in Manchester in England where it can get decently windy (not unheard of to get 40+ mph winds). I am renting an apartment on the first floor (2nd floor in US nomenclature), about 5 metres above ground level.

My current thoughts are to purchase a (ignore the balcony clips). I would then use adhesive tabs (to stick it to the stone window sill) and some weighted items (i.e. large rocks, or pots filled with soil and pebbles) to hold the rack down. Then, tying the tree's pot to the rack, to stabilise it in case of any high winds.

I can appreciate it's hard to assess using imagination but what would your thoughts be on a set up like this? Is it worth trying this or better to just try and keep the Chinese Elm inside with a growth lamp (the window does get a lot of direct sunlight).

Alternatively, I could just purchase a larger heavy cement/stone planter and put the elm in there, surely a good weighty planter would be too much for winds to blow off?

Any advice is greatly appreciated! :)

Yes, this above should work (not a perfect solution but...)

I would think the baby would knock the tree off.

A little more seriously - wind around a building is faster than wind out in the open, so you really want to secure them somehow.

There is also an issue of birds, squirrels, etc.

My very first bonsai was an azalea. I cut a very little bit off, scared that I would cut off too much, and put it on a shelf outside the apartment. That night a cat (or something) got up and sharpened its claws on my little azalea, leaving about two leaves and a couple of main branches. It grew out and was pretty impressive until something else knocked it off a year later. The cat had better bonsai sense than I did.

Thanks all for your contributions! :) Ivan Mann, would you say it is overall better to have the chinese elm sit inside directly next to my south facing window with a growth lamp than it is to risk exposure to high winds, birds, squirrels etc.?

Outside.

Trees have spent millions of years learning how to live outside, and succeeded. Read up on weather where it came from and give it as close to that environment as possible, including temperatures, humidity, light/dark hours, and anything else.

One thing to be careful of is the temperature of the pot. You may need to insulate it to keep it from freezing or heating up too fast.

Even that is in most places of the world not an issue.:)

A big problem here. In the summer I have to insulate most of the pots so the roots don't fry.
