Silent auction lead me here was created by tsalagi76

Hello! I am new to bonsai, but not new to gardening or potted plants. I have several succulents I've been tending on for the last 2-3 years.

I recently acquired a small juniper in a silent auction (attached photo). It appears to be pruned by the previous owner or maybe the nursery they got it from. I've got a friend who is into bonsai, and from his advice and what I have read here, I don't think I need to to much to it at this point except water, fertilizer, and let it grow.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hello there.
I would plant it in the ground for 2-3 years to fatten up the trunk.
If you want to keep it as it is, do as you please just keep it outdoors.

I think you should remove the trunk on the left side of the tree (as shown in the picture) and make into a slanted style or wire it and make it a informal upright style. I wouldn't plant it the ground since the trunks are moderately fat and you will have trouble wiring it later on unless you want the tree to look similar to what it is right now. By looking at the picture, it seems like you should repot the juniper into a soil that has better water drainage since junipers don't like being kept on the wet side. Prune off some of the foliage on the right trunk because it is pretty dense and will attract pests. Keep it outside or near a window that gets lots of sunlight.
You don't HAVE to do what I have just told you since I am just trying to give you suggestions. Go by your own will and then your tree will thrive. I hope this helped you

Do NOT keep it by the window, only if on the outside :)
Junipers won?t survive indoors....

I second Kristof... if you want to kill the plant... keep it inside. I have owned four junipers.... the only one that is still alive is the one I keep outside. If you have an unheated room, that has similar conditions to being outside... it might work... but as soon as the air dries out, you probably will have problems with bugs... like, spider mites, for example.

This plant is miniature. It is way too young to start serious bonsai training. it needs fattening up.
And yes. Junipers need to be outside. Always.

I would not do that.

I wouldn't plant it the ground

I would.

since the trunks are moderately fat

They are quite thin and lack tapering.

and you will have trouble wiring it later on

Juniper branches are quite flexible, they will have to get much thicker than this before it will get hard to wire them.
Well... actually you can always wire them. I guess you meant bending them ;)

Prune off some of the foliage on the right trunk because it is pretty dense and will attract pests

That seems a strange reason to want to prune foliage.

Keep it outside or near a window that gets lots of sunlight.

Keep it outside. Period.

I see you are 12 years old. That's a great age to start with this hobby. While it is good to try and answer questions and it will help you learn, I think you should be careful with giving advice. Seems to me you still have to learn a lot yourself.

Thanks for the replies and advice!

Outside is the concencious, so I will find a nice spot for it. I have a small garden off the porch that usually gets plenty of sun from noon until evening, even during the winter months. Also sounds like I need to read up on winter care, since it will be winter before I know it. I could easily find a place to plant it into the ground for winter, and maybe longer, to allow for the trunk to thicken. You have all given me lots to ponder upon. B)

Mossy Moss, there is no problem with your age, but always make sure you are offering the right advice. Junipers should ALWAYS be outside. Also, never cut of a primary branch in fall. Just make sure the advice you offer is correct.

I've been trying to help out people by giving them advice but it seems like the information I am giving is incorrect. I learned everything off YouTube and from websites so maybe that was what went wrong. Sorry if I gave out wrong information and maybe I should study correct information. I think I still have a long way to go
