I'm not going to discuss again what bonsai is, and that it is more than just a potted tree.
What you found is a bonsai, not a mallsai.
The definition of mallsai is really not hard to find. It is a cheap, mass-produced young tree, often formed in a typical, standard S-shape, that has little or no artistic value. The word Mallsai is a combination of 'Mall' and 'Sai'. A Mall is a shopping center - they sometimes sell house plants, including these trees, but have no knowledge of, and do not sell, real bonsai. Unfortunately, as they are so widely spread, these trees are the incorrect image many people (that are not into bonsai) have, when thinking of bonsai.
Your first piece looks like a mallsai. As bonsai is an artform, trying to create an impression of a tree in nature, your piece therefore is an imitation of an imitation of an impression of a tree.
The second one is better. If you want to make better artworks though, study your subject and learn what a real bonsai looks like.

Posted 8 years 6 months ago #23233That is definitely not a mallsai, if that tree is real, it is amazing and took decades upon decades to nurture to that point. if it was an artificial tree, it is a great sculpture, but not nearly as cool as the real thing would be. a mallsai is a small barely trained tree, usually with very little if any ramification. sold in big box stores, gift shops, and other places where you will never find any real art of any kind, ever. 名媛直播 take years to create. with attention given almost every single day. 名媛直播 are things that HAVE to be included in your will. the best examples took multiple lifetimes to create and they will outlive all of us. A bonsai is never done and always changing. You will grow the tree and train it. it will get to where you want it to be and then it will outgrow itself and need to be cut back and then trained again to get it to the next variation of the tree.KenHiguchi wrote: when I looked up mallsail I found some that looked like this
My favorite part is the potting and styling and then sitting back and enjoying it with a feeling of accomplishment and pride in the work that has been put into it. artificial trees may have their place, ie: pf changs, but people in this forum I think generally just love live trees and the impossible challenge of working towards something greater than ourselves. An artificail tree would maybe be "neat" for a few days but I would loose interest very soon. It is kind of like a one-liner joke with no real substance or passion. It will never be as good as a carefully articulated and crafted funny Story.

I think I get it. If I'm right a bonsai can't be done, and it's always changing. and that is something you can't get with an artificial bonsai. And also the day to day care that goes in to a real bonsai. I see where your coming from now. Thanks that really helped.

Even the greatest artificial 名媛直播 I've seen don't have the looks of a real 名媛直播. The dynamics of a 名媛直播 are also of great importance. Just the fact that a 名媛直播 is alive makes it more beautiful, there is much more to the art than just the visuals.
I'll give you an example of music. Why would I listen to a violinist, or a cellist giving a recital in a recital hall, when I can digitally synthesize the sound of the instrument?. It isn't the same... at all....

名媛直播 is not easy. as with any art it needs a lot of practice and you need to get something out of it; enjoyment. It seems like you really want a 名媛直播 tree, but you've had a lot of difficulties. And that's ok, we all do. Don't buy a mallsai, and don't buy a 名媛直播 either. Some mallsai die in a few weeks not because you are bad at taking care of them, but because they weren't designed to last. Potted in bad soil, being indoors for a long time when they shouldn't have been, etc... are reasons why getting a mallsai is a bad idea. Mallsai are also overpriced, and pollute your eyes. What I mean by polluting, is that you won't be able to see difference between mallsai and 名媛直播, as your "taste" for 名媛直播 will degrade.
Look at the 名媛直播 gallery in this website, and even better, go outside, go to the woods and look at old trees. Understand the beauty of an old tree, then get a tree from nursery stock and try to replicate what you see (after reading guides about going from nursery stock to bonsai). You will fail, kill a few, so don't spend too much money when you start, and don't try challenging styles. Eventually you'll start getting the hang of it. As a beginner myself, I suggest you start with boxwood. Boxwood is cheap, and very instructional, and definitely the species I've had more luck with. I started with junipers, as a lot of people suggest they are good for beginners. Yes they are hardy, but it is really hard to find a good one, they grow extremely slow, they almost don't back-bud, and they tend to come in really "weird" shapes; weird for a beginner, exceptional for an expert, and in some cases, weird and unsuitable for everyone. Junipers are beautiful, but I disagree from experience that they are good for beginners. You want to start with the tree style that you see more often in nature. Upright.
You can easily find a boxwood with a decent upright trunk for a very good price. Thin it a bit, and there you go, a miniature tree that you can look at, practice, and learn how to take care of it. It won't be a great 名媛直播, nothing special, but for a beginner I think that's nice and rewarding. As you progress you can go for slanting trunks, and more exotic shapes; try out some wiring and more serious pruning.
