I have a medium size Chinese Elm that I have had for about four years. It gives me enjoyment at work. This past Christmas break, some work was being done outside my office that prevented me from getting to it for about 10 days and I forgot to take it home. When I got back, the leaves were all shriveled. I immediately watered it and have been ever since, but there is no sign of new leaves. Some of the branch tips became brittle, but not all. I scraped some bark today and found brown woody underneath. I did not see green.
Have I killed my Chinese Elm? If not, how long would you expect to wait to see new leaves form? Is there anything else I should be doing?
Thank you.
Christopher

If you are in the nortern hemisphere now is winter and the tree do not grow new leafs. Depending on your exact location it will start budding out some time between now and late april if it lives. If nothing had happened come late may you will know for sure it is dead.
If you are in the Southern hemisphere and it is summer now it is dead for sure.

Thank you. I was hoping a Chinese Elm could handle a brief drought period.
I am in the Northern Hemisphere. The strange thing about this tree was that it seemed to act like it was in the Southern Hemisphere although it was in near a window. It had just had all its leaves come out in December.
So I’m worried you are probably right that it is dead.
