That’s almost like asking “how to bonsai”, as the answer has so many nuances based on species, timing, refinement stage...
In general high N in spring is good in pre-bonsai stage, where you’re not yet in need to keep the growth compact and actually want to thicken the trunk as quickly as possible.
Except with some species that respond to high nitrogen with unsightly leggy growth that won’t be recoverable in later stage.
So... “depends”, I’d say...

As far as I am concerned it is too early to add any fertiliser. The trees are not in leaf properly yet and it is too cold. I never rush to add fertiliser. I will not start for at least 3 or 4 more weeks.

I live in UK and it not that cold sun is nice and giving good Uv's, normal for this time of year and should go on where you live the fertilizer should only be applied when the tree's start to open they buds.

@m5eaygeoff
Where are you located?
For me firtilizing started about 3 weeks ago. Living in The Netherlands, everything is growing nuts, most have 5 to 10cm growth some species even more.
Only the common Ash tree's around where i live still has closed buds, everything else is in leaf or leafing out.

Is'nt the maple, the tree, that went indoors with the frost, leaved out, and you placed it back outside, lost it leaves again.
If so, I would wait with that tree with firtilizing until is has new health growth. It is in soil that decomposes itself, so can release slow nutrients.
