Morning,

This is my first bonsai project. I have 3 Jacaranda mimosifolia That I have sprouted from seed. They have been doing well off and on. But now the lower leaves are browning and falling off. I have been watering twice a week. A small amount in the pot itself and then some in the white container that the terra cotta pot sits in to allow the pots to soak up the water. The soil is fresh, planted in new bag soil 5 months ago, the ph was neutral by test. I've read the topic of over/under watering, I don't think the soil is completely drying out, but I don't think I am overwatering.

Can anyone give a tip?

Well, Jacarandá are native here, I am growing a couple myself and...
They drop the lower leaves from time to time.
I don't recommend your watering schedule, I water when needed, and from the top with a fine nozzle.

Thanks, I will adjust the water schedule. The book I read suggested to never water directly to the roots/ soil. Use the soak method. The browning is what concerns me, makes me think of rot up from the soil.

When you say fine nozzle, do you mean a small diameter spout?

I think that Clicio is referring to a type of 'watering can' with many small holes in the cap at the end of the spout.... or a watering wand that attaches to a hose. Watering devices that deliver multiple fine streams of water at once reduce the disruption of surface soil/substrate. This becomes more important if you have or are developing nebari or your tree is in a shallow pot where there will be many fine roots just below the surface that could die off if suddenly exposed for too long. Or it just saves you time in redistributing the particles that got moved around by too strong of a flow.

By "very fine nozzle" I mean the spray the nozzle produces either in a watering can or on a hose.
