I have a recently purchased Jordan Japanese Fullmoon Maple Shirasawanum 2 - Year Live Plant . The root ball measures 3inch X 3inch X 8 inch. This is an extremely slow growing tree. I would like to put it in a large 1960s Japanese bonsai pot. that measures 16 inch diameter and 12 inch depth. This would be big for the root ball but I would never have to move it again.... and it is a very nice pot from the sixties. Is the pot too large?
I live in zone 6-7 . How should I winter this pot. It will live in a outdoor, but protected entry, but I am thinking about bringing it into the unheated garage after it has gone dormant. Any comments, warnings, or advice is appreciated! Thank you.

Your pot is too large. The tree would suffer from permanently wet roots which is detrimental to the health of the plant.
