looking at my bundle i noticed that the tips of the trees were definitely dead, so i cut back until i saw a bit of green on each shoot. it ended up with me cutting a lot of the saplings back and i still think the wood i cut to is dead. Perhaps i will just have to try again next year.

What do you all think, is this a very lost cause and should I stop watering these sticks!?

check a bud if it is hard and brittle its dead if they are still plyable you may still have a chance. i have learned green doesnt always mean life it just means the wood isnt dried out.dont stop watering yet just dont leave it wet and keep your figers crossed,trees can be surprizing sometimes

I found what you did to be interesting. Even if you tree dies or is dead having gone through the process of assembly I am sure you learned a lot. I hope you use this knowledge to try again.
Some species of trees are easier to fuse than others. Trident Maple seems to be one of the easiest to fuse.
I have had mixed results in my projects but feel each new project is a progression.

looking back, i don't think that the trees were ever alive, and if they were, they certainly weren't when i started putting them together. I have about 8-10 ficus cuttings that have successfully rooted that i think i will try and fuse in a similar manner. I will post the progress and results somewhere in these forums.

In a rather anti-climactic ending, all the trees were dead. I don't think it had so much to do with anything I did in the binding together but was instead, rotting roots. Maybe i didn't allow them to dry out enough i the beginning, maybe I watered too much. Oh well, next year I will start with healthier stock.
