Hello.
I got this chinese elm, repoted it in proper soil and in 2 days it just started to back bud like crazy. It's doing very good.
The thing is, I need it to back bud in the lower part of the trunk in order to correct that inverse taper. Is there any way I can encourage that?
I know that more foliage encourages back budding, with the increased flow of the nutrients, water and photosynthesis. I just don't know if it will do that on the lower part.
Or, graft a branch from a different elm the next spring?
Thank you.

You can air layer it above the bulge

Mmm ... don't really want to do that just now after I repoted, and pruned the roots. I also want to keep the structure. I think if it doesn't show any sign of buds in the lower part, the next year i'll try to repot in something deeper in order to form roots higher.
Not a big fan of air layering. Not in theese conditons at least.
