I always really wanted a maple bonsai and to grow my own from a sapling. Earlier this year, I potted a small sapling I found, and it has since grown very well. It is now 20 in, and I was wondering when and where I should begin trimming it to make sure it stays bonsai. I don't need a full maple  !
Any help would be appreciated, and thanks for your time!

This identical question has been answered regularly on this forum, the last time a day ago. Use the search function.
Your sapling will not 'stay bonsai', as it isn't bonsai. Let it grow for a couple of years, preferably in full soil.

You let it grow in the ground for years... as you would with any regular tree. When the trunk reaches a good thickness, you chop it and let a new leader grow. That's one method. Other people let it grow for a few years, chop early, grow new leader, chop again, etc etc... as Auk said, search for it, it has been answered very well before. But for you. Plant in ground, and let it grow for years. In the meantime you can read about 名媛直播, or work with other species. Nursery grown stuff is great for practicing and making "pretty little trees" in shorter term. But 名媛直播, is a project that takes decades. And starting from a sapling? oh boy...
