I know. "You're going to do rosemary?"

It was a gift, and after cutting off the lollipop top half, I couldn't ignore the little guy's character.

I'm a little undecided on whether to go with pads, or more of a pine-looking, broomish style. I searched the forum, and didn't see anything on rosemary. Anyone have any experience pruning and keeping it? Any idea on how well it backbuds or handles training?

I'm especially interested in styling suggestions!

It does not do backbudding. It can be wired but be careful - branches can break without warning.

Prune the long shoots. Make sure that you leave a couple of needles on the remaining branch; do not cut back to bare wood.

Strip the needles (from the cuttings, not the plant!). They go well with baked potatoes, coarse salt and roasted garlic.

I'll go out on a limb and suggest the rosemary depicted is not in Auk's collection. Just baed on where he lives, I doubt he has such a monster.

That's a shame, but I'm sure that you know you can grow most anything in a crappy climate, with enough patience, and a spouse that's an enabler.

Thanks though. The photo is awesome. I'll keep you guys posted on my rosemary experiment.

Perhaps. But I also know Auk is a big fan of growing things that do well in local climate. Rosemary just does not create trunks like that as far north as we are. It will live, and survives winters of up to -10, -15 with the right care & in full ground. But it never goes like it does in say Spain. We are at about 53 degrees north, similar to Edminton, Alberta, Canada.

What is your soil like? I might have to try that.

I get that. I've seen too many maples, azaleas, and others turn crispy. I had a mastic that I couldn't keep healthy, let alone train. I learned a lot from it, but in the end, it was more stress than enjoyment.
