when the branches have set or when the wire is halfway grown into the bark, whichever is first. Very much species & time of year & climate dependent how long this take.s

Don't try to unbend the wire you have put on - that's a sure way to damage the tree. Proper bonsai wire cutters are not expensive and allow wire cutting right close in to the branch. Apologies if you already know this!

I always unbend the wire when I take it off... unless when it is thicker wire that I cannot bend without damaging the tree.
