Fukien Tea Ramification question

I have this Fukien Tea I got at the nursery. It's healthy for months and growing a lot of shoots.

I cut off the shoots, green and lignified ones, expecting it to branch out into two, like a Y-shape. However, a new single shoot just grows, instead of the expected Y. I cut it again, and it's still the same.

Do I just keep at it until it finally branches out into two ?

Yes - I've had mine for nearly 2 years and styling seems to be on a reactive basis, ie follow what the tree decides to do...

Thanks, Dave, that's very helpful. I won't be scratching my head so much now.

I got these fukien tea as I just wanted to fill up some empty spaces and was curious about them, and they were on sale. I didn't realize they were quirky. I guess it will take a long time to get some ramification, maybe I'll just change them to a single old big one as there were several at the nursery.

I did notice from images online that not many get it, only a few probably old ones, like the linked image below :
