I could use advice..this is a picture of my Chinese quince..I'm very pleased with how it's doing, but I'm wondering if I should prune the top to encourage a thicker trunk or will that only make it spread outward...

I want?to add that I got the tree from Bill Valavanis in May of this year and was was beautifully structured. I've wired a few branches and done a bit of?trimming...but I'm not sure of?the direction I want to take it I was thinking of a cascading style, but I'm not sure that's what I want now..any ideas or suggestions are more than encouraged!

It will not work as a cascade, the wire is doing nothing, the plant needs some pruning. It is still a young plant and needs to grow a lot before you decide on a style. Fertiliser is needed regularly and good sunlight. I would want to have a lot more growth next year before any styling.

You encourage truck thickening by growth. The more foliage and the more sun they get, the faster it will thickening. At least in absolute measurement. If we talk about proportion to the hight, which is something we want to be at least 1 to 12, pruning will help. But always focus on absolute thickness first.
