Hello,

I bought this Mugo Pine from Lowe's for very in expensive. when I started to uncover the roots I saw this.
At first I thought it was kinda cool. I'm having second thoughts.?

What forms roots this way? Is it safe for the tree to remove the wound circular roots?

Do not do any root pruning at this time of year, especially Mugo Pines. It will depend on what root is under the curling roots how much you can remove. If there is a lot you will have to leave most and do it in stages over several years. It might be possible when re potting to bury the offending roots under the soil, but only you can see if that is possible.

The only question not yet answered is why the roots grow like this. It is a result of growing in a far to small nurcery pot for many years.

In my mind it is better to pay twice as much for a tree that needs half the time to become a decent bonsai. This one will take very long and it is not for certain it will survive a beginner doing that advanced root pruning.

You know that this is a pure outdoor tree don't you?

In my mind as a beginner, I don't want to spend a lot of money if it does not?work out. ?I view this root thing as an interesting,
experience building challenge. ?The tree was $14. I'm not going to loose sleep if trying something to create an awesome nebari
goes South. ?

I'm a beginner but I pay attention to the lectures. ?Also, I live in S. California, EVERYTHING is outdoors.?

Thanks for your concern.

I am sorry to say. Building an awsome nebari from that will take longer than growing a tree from seed with an awsome nebari from the start.

There seems to be a consensus in USA that mugos is best repotted in summer. Do not take my word for it, but check with bonsai clubs around you. Ask for people that grow mugos and ask for advice and help.
