Cracks do happens. Most of the time it can heal but sometimes one lose everything above the crack.
This one seems quite small. I don't think the Cambridge is damaged.
Some people seal it with putty or petroleum gelly, some don't. I am not sure if it makes any difference other than peace of mind for the artist.
I tend to wrap big trunks in raffia before wiring. Just to protect it a little from wire scars. That way I don't see any cracks before unwiring.
Anyway. Cracks do happen in nature as well and there are noone there to seal it.
