Hi,

I have had this ficus for around 5 years now and never done much with it. I would like to start reducing leaf size and trying to get it more bushy. I have already started back budding to stimulate more growth, but unsure where to start with reducing leaf size. I'm aware this can be done with defoliation, if that's an option in this case. If so, how would you recommend starting, would you do a branch/area at a time to avoid to much trauma to the tree?

Hello, is it kept inside?
Because if it is, it's harder to reduce the leaves, as they tend to get bigger in order to catch more sunlight.

I second Albas on that. As long as weather permit, keep it outdoors.

I cant help to think that this tree is not ready for leaf size reduction. That is a focus for an almost show ready bonsai. Your tree has so many other features that needs to be worked on before. Nebari, tapering, initial styling, branch placement etc. Leaf size reduction also reduce development speed. So work on the others and start to think about leaf size when everything else is in place.
