How to change this old bougainvillea in a pot to a bonsai was created by Albie L

My mother gave me this bougainvillea which has been in this pot for more than 20 years. It flowers beautifully most of the year but is winter in South Africa.
How should I prune or perhaps "chop" to get a look similar to the typical shape? I will obviously break the pot and prune the roots as well.
Typical Google examples
I realise that I will eventually need quite a big bonsai pot
Any advice will be much appreciated

First step is to make a vision for the tree. At this point it is not possible to to bend the trunk, so you eigther have to go for the existing trunk line of cut back to a new future leader. If you go for option 1 now you just have to decide which brances to use for the future design ond cut back to shape. If you go for option 2 there will be a waiting time of about 5-10 years until branch selection.
I would put it in a lot bigger pot for a while in order to speed up the process.

Thanks for your reply.
I think I will go for Option 1 (keeping the old trunk line), but the tree has 2 "lines" identified as 1 and 2, as I see it.
If I remove trunk 1, the shape will be awkward in my opinion. I wonder if I should not remove trunk 2 and try to get a broom-like form
If I should go that route, any idea about the height of the tree (if and where I should shorten trunk 1?
I will plant the tree in a big pot and for now, I suppose I should leave the roots intact.
Thanks again for your input. Any other opinions will also be appreciated

In my opinion it is a question of option 1 and heeping trunk 1 or option 2 and keeping trunk 2. I don't see any use for both 1 and 2. But it is your tree, you are the artist, you decide.
