Is it too late for the roots of this lemon tree? was created by Rakesh, London

This is a lemon tree which I grew from seed several years ago now. And while this means I should have been in full control of how the plant grows I got lazy and just left it in a normal pot for a while and its roots formed this weird bulbous shape at the base and most the roots are just growing straight down which isn't ideal. Is it too late or can I do something that in time will fix the root base to give a more spread out flare at the surface?

It is not too late. But it may take some time to correct.

Ok thank you. To fix it I assume I would just try to grow radial roots out from the base and in time slowly prune off the roots growing straight down?

That is one option. The other one is air layering which i think is the better option in this case.

How risky would you say air layering would be to the health of the tree? Since I've grown this tree from seed over some years I wouldn't want to do it if it has a fair chance of killing the tree. Also you mean I should air layer right at the base right?

As you do not know how to air layer, and if you do it doing yes you could easily kill the plant I suggest you find a club near you or someone that can help. From what I can see if you planted the tree a little deeper and mounded the soil slightly it would hide the roots you do not like. Personally, I see nothing wrong with the roots, and if it was mine I would not be concerned.

While I would like to improve the root base of the tree I am fine with how it is, and since I like this tree I will probably just find some other tree to do more risky work on. In the mean time then I think I will just see how normal root pruning goes over the years
