Hey, last year I started growing a couple of baobab and silk trees from seeds and now 18 month later they have grown into 50-70 cm thin sticks.. the trees got leaves but none of them have started develop any branches, they are just growing tall and thin. I am not sure if this is expected or not. Does branches develop later, or am I doing something wrong? I keep them indoors, maybe plays in.

They are stretching upwards looking for sunshine. Put them outside and they will find the sun, stop growing upwards, and start growing leaves to absorb energy from the sun.

We prune our trees in order to prevent them from growing taller.

Hi, yes this is normal. The trick with bonsai is to control that growth, and decide how you want to develop a trunkline. I happen to have made a video on this a few days ago. Take a look.

"50-70 cm thin sticks"
That's really thick, so I'm gonna supose it's 0,5 ~ 0,7 cm ??
This Leatherback video is very helpfull on the subject, it explains well what's the logic behind thickening, and "after thickening" procedures.

Yes, sorry, 50-70 tall. 5mm thick. No branches (but leaves).

Got it, so yes, they need big containers in order to thicken, and some species won't develop any lower branch if not pruned back, so take some time to watch the video above, I'm sure it's gonna be very helpfull, and also have in mind that different species have different behaviours, and some species thicken a lot faster than others.

Thank so much, this is a very insightful and inspiring video and a, to me, much needed explanation on how branches contribute to the trunk thickness.
