I looked at this hinoki cypress all spring and into the summer, and finally I thought I would pick it up, and see if something could be made out of it...
My fist question: you can see that the root ball is rather large. How much of it can I prune next spring? I know junipers have a direct connection between roots and specific parts of the foliage... do hinoki have that?
Second: how far back can I trim the branches? . some say back to the furthest green and growing vein on the branch...
I did added some wire to pull the branches out a bit, but we'll see how that goes.

Any other ideas?

I have a question.. Why di dyou put it in such a large box? Now your tree has a lot of space to drown in.
I would have kept it in the original pot, and repotted in spring.

You can remove a reasonable amount. I try to cut back to clear side-roots, especially when cutting bigger, main, roots. It is a young plant and unless you now in one go fully remove roots, the tree should not drop branches due to root pruning.

You can cut back quite far too, but I would do this only when well established with the roots. So I would repot, wait till mid-spring and only once you get good growth, consider a light prunning. First styling can then be done next fall.

Maybe to stop the soil from leaving the box thrue the big gaps?

the "tissue" is a tarp used in raised garden beds, to prevent weeds from coming up through the bottom... it breaths well, and keeps in the soil... also lets water through pretty well.

The original plastic planter from the garden center was torn... so I had to put it in something else.... the root ball is as deep as the the box. the "soil" around the root ball is only zeolite, so it should be fine... as far as watering is concerned. I'm thinking I might take up to 30% of the root ball and cut the grow box down maybe half... is that a good plan? I'm not sure if I want to add some organic material to the soil mix in the spring, what do you think?

the grow box is a crate used for fruit or wine... I didn't have anything else...

I think the main problem with that box is that you’d need something letting a lot of air go through the soil.
That’s why you usually go for wooden boxes.
From what I see that’s plastic fabric, with kinda the opposite effect...
But I can’t really tell how much transpiration it actually allows from that photo alone, so I assume you did your evaluations...

Yes, I really hope so. That is how I have all my collected trees from the last two years. All of them are fine so far.

But really, I think the OP are happy if we stick to the questions, what do you think?
