So I managed to salvage this Pacific Yew (as seen in the pics below). It came out with a decent supply of roots and lots of interestingly shaped branches / twigs / dead wood and scars to work with.





That being said, I am new to bonsai and would appreciate any feedback / suggestions you can offer.

Put it in the ground and leave it there for 10 years.

Yews bounce back VERY faast from a dig, if done in the right time of year (Early spring). They will establish themselves very fast, it looks like. However, they invest a lot of energy in doing so. So you should leave the plant -after potting up in a suitable substrate- alone for at least 2 years.. During that time, you can decide which direction to take.
As winter is coming.. Protect the ptted plant against rain. Taxes hates wet feet, and with the reduced roots, it will have a hard time keep the feet dry.
