early signs off a dying tree was created by simplysaid

I've gotten word from members of my club, that Junipers can stay green for months before they die.
Does anyone have opinions or experience with seeing the signs of a sick or dying juniper or trees in general?
This may help people who are buying trees for pre bonsai or mallsai or ikeasai or parking lot-sai.

That's correct.

Yeah... I tried an airlayer but it failed. I put the branch in a pot and left it there during the winter. It stayed green until spring, then rapidly turned brown. That was a Chinese juniper.
There are some signs - for a needle juniper, the color does change, it's a different kind of green. The needles shrivel a bit, get stiffer and no longer point in the 'right' direction. Now, in winter, the color can change too, and when needles seem stiffer than usual, that doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.

But you can do what I did. Cut off a branch, stick it in the ground, and see it change over time.

I once transplanted a pine to a new pot. It stayed green for 1,5 year but it showed no signs of new growth. So I decided to check the roots - the roots were not existing - literally, the trunk finished in the soil, but it being wired was still stable. I think that conifers have such good ability to stop the transpiration of the needles when they are under stress, that they can stay green for long after the roots are gone. I still kept it for curiosity and only after the 1,5 year the needles suddenly dried and fell of.

But the earliest sign of a dying tree is when somebody writes on the forum that he just bought a tree and wants to prune the branches, prune the roots and wire it - at that moment the tree is dead.

So true and so sad. As we can see on this forum, this happens very often. People are so convinced that they must do something and are so eager to start that they sometimes don't even accept advice.

Sometimes they kill the tree, buy a new one, and get into a buying frenzy. I see advertisements like this a lot on a dutch auction site:

I'm ending my hobby and I'm selling these bonsai pots:

Normally, people ending their hobby sell their trees. We all probably have more pots than trees... but these people do not sell trees. I check that often by clicking the seller to find out what else they sell. It makes me wonder. So many pots, not selling any trees. All pots cheap, mallsai pots. My guess is that he has no trees to sell - as non of them survived.

It's a guess... I may be wrong. Maybe they have given away their trees to friends or family to take care for them. I doubt that though.

Kind of sad. I don't like to se people give up or give in to the life long process. We all have our reasons for getting into, and staying, and or leaving.
I try to check my trees every day, but since I'm still learning, I get a little gun shy to cut, re pot, or feed.
If only they could talk! :S

Im now confident when feeding (I killed a tree for overdosing on liquid fertiliser a few years ago) and learned how and when to cut.
But I am scared when pruning the roots or cutting very large branches.

Yes.. I posted before about losing a tree because it was trimmed and repotted at the wrong time. I took bad advice. The maple showed signs of dying but was advised that it's shocked and feeding it could help (when your sick, you need meds). Yeah... it died dead real quick.

I just did that. It was desperatelly rootbound mallsai but seemed to be healthy anyway.
I washed and pruned the roots, cut most of the trunk away and wired remaining branches.
I think that if you do that to healthy looking indoor mallsai anytime of the year, and you know how to do it and what to take care of, it won?t really mind.
Now you can stone me :D

So Kristof: Have you found any distinct signs of eminent death on any of your past trees? Particularly junipers.
