Next Years Project was created by chilliman

Hello All,

I,m thinking of lifting these two Field Maples out of the ground next spring (2017)
I really like the thickness of the trunk on the left and the shape of the right one.
I,m looking for opinions on how high to cut from the base?
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hard to tell from a 2D photo, not seeing the perspective. A view from different angles and something else on the photo for size comparison may help.
But how about cutting them off and letting them in the ground? That way they will develop new branches quicker.

Thanks for the reply,
I like the idea of leaving them in the ground to develop but my one concern with it is the trees are hard up to the fence so probably wouldn't get any new growth to that side of the tree.
I,ll take another photo to show the size

Thank you.

True. You could try and dig it up with as much as possible of the root ball and plant it somewhere else where it has room.

If you really want to make good bonsai, I am afraid you would cut them very low. Maybe at one trunk tichness above the roots. Then let them shoot out, till the leader reaches 1/2 to 1/3 of the trunk thickness below the cut. Then do it once more. After that, you are ready to start developing the canopy.

So yes, I would do what Auk is suggesting: Cut them. Work the roots (So you start developing your nebarig too; There are many video's and websites around showing you what to do). Then replant for a few years. These are field maples? They should respond really well to lots of sun, fertilizer and water. In 3-4 years your second cut can be made, probably, at which point yuou also lift the tree again, to re-work the roots again. Then in 6-7 years I suspect you will have very good starting material..

I think this is the first post in a long time, where it wasn't suggested to grow a trunk first!
I'm curious as how you're going to save the fence. Also... how large of a root ball would these maples have and I would think they're entwined. I think these may be good questions for me to know answers to so that if I run into the same situation, I can decide on taking the tree based on survival percentage.
Thanks

You could get away with collecting it you chop the roots soon. But maples normally are pretty strong, and might survive with small rootballs.

Too soon for it, but this article, about root grafting, may be interesting.
