European Larch was created by Claudiu

Hello there forum. So I've got this pretty good looking european larch. The only problem with it is the base of the trunk that's been bented quite weird.
The tree's got potential and is doing very well. (sorry about the nasty looking pics I will upload some better ones).
But for now I was wondering if I can do something with the trunk.
Maybe try to make some aerial roots and then cut down to a straight trunk?
Thank you.

I wonder what your definition of 'potential' is. Theoretically, a seedling has the most potential - as it's nothing yet and you can completely shape and form it to reach your goal - which will take decades though. However, in general I think that when we talk about a tree with potential, we mean an interesting tree, with good nebari, an mature and tapered trunk, proper branch positioning and ramification, that we can shape into a decent (pre-)bonsai in a fairly small amount of time. If we use that definition, your plant has little potential.

But for now I was wondering if I can do something with the trunk.

Doesn't make sense to create aerial roots. Do you mean you want to air-layer it? It's an option.

By the way: it looks like the trunk was chopped above that what originally was a side branch? Bit hard to see on the photos.

I created something really quick to show what I would do.

White = air layer first year then plant in the ground/a deep pot.
Red = cut after air layer is removed
Green = placement and direction of new shoot
Black = carving after the plant has recovered

Wait, do larch back bud well?

Good plan and very much in line with what I was thinking. it does leave you with a tree with a straight trunk, but you will have lower branches to improve that.

However:

Red = cut after air layer is removed
Green = placement and direction of new shoot
Black = carving after the plant has recovered

Wait, do larch back bud well?

I don't think so.

I know, I doubt that what I described would work, but sometimes I like try stupid things just to see how stupid they are.

Yeah.... So what about air layering at the white lines, than cutting there and straight to planting in a larger pot to develop roots.

You CANNOT do what is suggested. Larch WILL NOT backbud. You need to first create a branch at the place where you want it, through grafting. Only then you can do a layer, so in 2 years earliest.

As Auk said. Not ideal material. Probably you will need to tackly this with bending rather then cutting back.
