Two pines: The first: Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergii)
I bought this black pine two and a half years ago as pre-bonsai from a vendor at the NC Arboreteum's bonsai expo.
- First year: let it grow
- Two winters ago: jinned the top
- Last summer: worked on back budding and needle reduction
- This winter: pruned & wired, some carving (needs more)
- This spring: repotted.
- This summer: letting it grow
Needle reduction/back budding was produced using the techniques found here:
I could work on the branches some more to give depth, but whatchu think?

Second tree: Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus).
Collected this several years ago and toyed around with it. I wasn't comfortable taking on pines at the time, so this has been my tester, if you will. It's super ugly, has only some potential if I cut it to the first branch. All the same, I'm proud to have kept it alive for six years.
This past year, I tried the same techniques I did with the black pine, which should have killed it. It was in very good health when I started, but white pine certainly doesn't respond like black pine. By end of summer, no needles anywhere except the lower branch, though plenty of buds everywhere. This spring it opened up with mini needles (normally 3-5"). It has been repotted this year and being let alone. Poor guy, but papa's so proud. The ugly one you just love.
Figured this might give ideas if done on a healthy tree, but holy moly - be wary.
