I collected this privet from a cow field three years ago, and really haven't had to do much work to it. Basic structure was already there. No wiring, just clip & grow as needed. The pictures are from a repot this weekend, roots looking great.
My only main issue is the secondary branch. It looks fine from the front, but the back is a mess. As you can see, this branch was bent around sometime in it's previous life and fused with the tree. I've only removed the dead portion covering it so that it may grow thicker. Someone had made the suggestion of pruning it off & regrowing, but I kinda like it how it is. Anyone see issues with that? As long as it's hidden to the back, should be good? Anyone see major health problems?

May 8 update
I took this to a bonsai workshop at my club - some think I should take off the long thick branch, while others said leave it and take the top off. A few said cut both and leave the two back branches and create new structure from there. Leaves cover up everything, so the previous posts give a better idea of what's underneath. Thoughts?

Looks good as is. The first branch is rather thick however it has alot of character which will be lost if removed entirely.
On the other hand the leader is fairly straight and ordinary to look at but with some branches placed in key locations
it'll get better. The 2 work well together at present and since the Tree has far to go yet you can alter your styling along the way when the time arises.
