Styling and Trimming of Tea Tree was created by wadenq

Hey all, I am in the beginning stages of trimming and styling my Fukien Tea Tree and would love some help on deciding which (if any) branches should be removed and if any additional leaves need to be cut off and finally if any branches need to be trained to grow a different direction. All help and opinions are welcomed!!

Sorry if I sound negative - and repetitive, if you 've read more of my posts - but this tree is in no shape to be styled.
Also, this is a mallsai. It's not a pre-bonsai or bonsai-starter material, it is not supposed to be styled. The only thing needed would be maintenance pruning to keep its shape. There is no need for that now though.

First thing is to just nurse this tree very well and make it grow. You don't have much to work with currently, you need more branches/foliage. Then you can start thinking about restyling it.

The shape of the trunk of this tree is not too bad, really. It's an S-shape, but not the usual symmetrical and ugly one, so I do see options :)

Thank you for the reply and honestly I was a little worried that what you said might be the case... I'll be honest and say that I am fairly new to bonsai and have already learned quite a bit that I didn't know previously. I bought this tree from an online retailer and was a little disappointed when I received it. I will nurse this tree and help it grow the best I can.

If I wanted to start my own tree from an already growing tree, would I be able to do so with say a Juniper? What I am thinking of doing is buying a 4-5 year old Juniper tree from a nursery and then turning it into a bonsai starter. Is that considered kosher and doable?

Yes, absolutely. That's actually a common practice - so yes, it is kosher and doable.
A 5 year old tree may be a bit young though, but if you give it time, you surely can turn it into a bonsai starter.

Thank you for that response. I am looking forward to doing this with a Juniper tree. I feel like the easiest style would be the Formal upright but would like to maybe try something more advanced. Is there any guides out there on how I can do this successfully?

Hi buddy,

I am new to bonsai myself and I think the best way is to visit your local bonsai center where they might do some courses.
I went to ours and took a course where the owner tought us to do Moyogi style from young junipers and answered all our questions.
I planted the tree in my front garden byut here is example of another one I bought in the nursery and tried to style at home.
It was just straight stick something like this:

and I did this with it:

Then I did a common mistake that Walter Pall says every beginner does - Tried to style this Picea Konica.
It will probably die byt at the moment it looks quite nice :D
I still hope this one will make it :P

So just study the net, try to get you some courses and you will get there and learn on your own mistakes :)

Both nicely styled.

Yep, the Picea... it wants to grow its branches upwards, it will not like them being bent down.
Still a nice example of how important the branch position is for the image of a tree.

Nice tree to make something with it. I would suggest going to the Youtube videos on 名媛直播, Kaizen 名媛直播 to start with, bonsai artist Ryan Neil is one of my Gurus I really like. Keep it going and send lots of pictures.
