Here is the latest version of my thyme bonsai. The first one died as many of you probably didn't know. Snuffed out by powdery mildew... However, after nearly two years and much concern and worrying I decided to pot my thyme and see if Thyme#2 can make it. I've attached three photographs which capture my herb at its best. So far it is still alive and I intend to keep it in the garage over the winter( near a window of course). Nevertheless, if anyone has suggestions, comments, concerns, or outrage I would appreciate hearing from you.
For your information the soil used for my herb is a mixture of screened Turface and course orchid potting mix. I am considering adding some bio char (essentially charcoal) to the mixture because I hear it has excellent oxygen and nutrient holding capacity.

It is a nice start. Personally, I think it still looks a lot like a trimmed shrub, rather than a tree; I would focus on making the trunk clearer, perhaps thicker, and give the canopy somewhat more structure.

I agree with leatherback about it not looking like a tree as such (no offence). But the thing i am worried about is that thyme rarely exceeds 10 years of life. But overall i think you have done a good job.

I agree it needs more work. I'm still worried it won't survive being potted... I hear thyme is rather picky about being moved into small containers. If I can get it established I will see how large of a trunk is possible. Unfortunately, with thyme it seems to stay rather small; however, given a few good seasons I might be able to thicken it up.
Really, I see this herb as a way to practice bonsai techniques and get quick results. In the long run I intend to work with more permanent long lived specimens. We'll see how this experiment goes...

I can just smell it from here, looks like a fun little project. Thyme, well it just up and dies. for no apparent reason.
