O.I.C. in that case I would only have a very few experimental trees. I am going to do my first attempt at air-layering after lunch. I'm using a shrub in the yard to see if I can do it. If it works, then I am going to do the tree that I really want to air-layer. If I had a dollar for every experiment I have tried in my life I could retire. :woohoo:

I first experimented on one airlayer like you, and it worked perfectly, by the time it was done i had started a whole lot more. This summer i did about 7 airlayer, but its getting too cold now, I wish i had started sooner haha.

I just started attempting air-layering, I don't know if it will work for me or not. I can't seem to do cuttings either all but one has just died. The one i'm still not sure about. I even used rooting hormone with no luck. The one that is still alive, I just stuck it in a pot with another tree that doesn't have alot of root.

I had a terrible time this winter with my cuttings. i lost a bunch of willows and 2 hydrangeas. My first air layering attempt was a miserable failure. haha.
just keep trying until you find what's right for you.

I never give up. The good thing about cuttings is they are free and will die anyway.

Hm.. Just pulled 10 cuttings out of the garden today because too many of them took root. Think I took 100 cuttings and lost < 10% of them... You need to make sure they are taken at the right time, and once they start to get foliage, you make sure they are not touched for weeks to months, as the young roots are very brittle. .

Great results. I'd take a 10% cutting loss any winter. As it stands now, I'm at an 85% loss. haha

Leatherback; sounds like you got it down. It was probubly the wrong time for mine. Oh well live and learn.
I dug up another big zelkova today. When I got home discovered I got a bonus with it. Then got caught by my wife. She followed me around to the side of the house she normally doesn't go. She hit the roof because she didn't know I had about 40 trees hidden over there. Looks like i'm sleeping on the couch tonight for our 18 anniversary.
I'll post the new one tomorrow, too tired right now.

I had to do an emergency repot. It rained about a week ago and the soil got water logged and all the foilage died. At first I thought it was because it got wind burn. We got some wicked winds after the rain. On closer inspection the soil was soggy. I pulled it out of the tub and put a better draining soil in and drilled more holes in the tub. I hope this will work. Some of the roots had started to rot so I cut those off, hope it has enough root now. Gonna keep my fingers crossed.
None of my other trees that are in the same mix are having the some problems.
