You can't slowly wash away the soil using this technique. Once the roots are established on the upper part of the tree it needs to be separated and planted so the new roots can establish themselves in the new pot without the parent tree providing nutrients.
Washing the soil away slowly should be used to expose surface roots for better nebari on an established tree.

Made it to Missouri - getting settled in. Highs of 75-80 degrees fahrenheit, Lows of 49-55 degrees fahrenheit for the next 10+ days. I am going to move her outside in the morning.
Looking forward to checking all the trees and bushes around the house - they are beginning to bud.
Still recovering from the 14 hour drive 3 days ago. Takes it's toll on the mind and body. Good to be home though.
