this one i picked up from a bonsai grower. He's is actually a well known bonsai master by the name of Bill Valavanis, pretty cool guy.
Me and my father went for a demonstration and to search for pots !!!no trees this time!!! we were adament on that. well i saw this one packed on a table of other azalea(i have wanted one since i began bonsai) and its trunk was twice the thickness of the others so 40$ later i had yet another tree,my dad picked up a hemlock .i took her home with a new pot and after a little pruning for shape and a repot here she is...cant wait till summer to see the flowers.
7 inches tall from the soil.

Good for you Keith...for treating yourself! She is beautiful and I can't wait to see photos of her in bloom come Springtime! Very nice pot too. You can trim and repot at the same time? I was under the impression when one repots a tree, nothing else should be done to it.
It's so great that you and your Dad do this together! Thanks for sharing!

thanks Leslie, its also going to be a new learning experiance, these are evergreen plants and live in a more acidic soil and a little more fussy than most from what i've read
...well the repot was taking the root ball out of the nursery pot and puting it into the new pot and filling in the spaces with new soil.i did my best not to disturb the roots.usually a repot consists of loosening up the roots and trimming, in that case you are under the correct impression.
if you look closely you can see the cuts on the lower branches.it was nothing major since the flower buds are formed now, there was just a few long lanky branches that looked funny.

Ahhh...yes. So you simply slip-potted her. I magnified the photo and was able to see where you trimmed. She is a beauty with a fabulous trunk. I'm looking forward to following her progression!

her is an update on this one...it hasn't been going good this year. i was waiting to see the flower color but that just didn't happen. i don't know if it was the weird spring going from 80's to freezing or not enough fert,or just my plain inexpieriance with the species but the flowers didn't make it . satzuki are hard prunned after flowering (early summer) so i figured it was time. as you will see it is backbudding slightly so i gave it a shot of liquid fert and a higher dose (12/8/12) of slow release and did some moderate prunning ...

For the exceptionally mild winter we had, you'd think our trees would be happy and be beautiful by now....but oh no....that would make sense. My hydrangea is sulking for some reason, it's leaves are just now opening.
