Red: Strong areas on your tree (As far as I can tell)
Purple: Fine
Yellow: Weak
Trick is to reduce strength in the red zone, so purple can develop. Yellow: Consider what you need; This is as risk of slowly dying back.
I would spend a few hours cleaning out and wiring this tree. But as said.. Probably best to have someone help you, as getting one step up is dificult, this being a 3D sport, and you really need to understand building foliage pads in 3D for it to work. Look into wiring foliage pads. This I found a good resource when trying to understand; Really try to visualize what is explained. (Best: Get a thuja branch from a large gardenplant and play around with it before you work the tree):
And an image similar to this, but which I cannot find now (Take from internet:)

Many thanks everybody for the feedback and the help provided!
In fact I had initially thought I would not go for a "sparse" foliage around the trunk... but that would end up as a messy shrub, I agree...
So it seems I need to be more "aggressive" in pruning and wiring than I though - I'll enroll for the B.E.course to get some deeper insights.
I might also need to chop one entire branch on top as there are 4 departing from the trunk at the same height...
Let me study it better and I'll post further pics.
Thanks again!

Hi all, following your advice, a couple of weeks ago I thinned and wired again my juniper.
Yes, I am well aware I have not dared too much... but before going on... do you think I am going the right direction?
I enclose again the "before" and the current picture.
Thank you!

What kind of juniper is this Ricky? And how old is it?
I think your on the right track. It looking good. I think you could go again with what you’ve taken off though.

it seems like you are on the right track, but personally i think i would trim some more next time. the tree seems a little top heavy still and i feel its still lacking some shape. personal opinion. other than that tree looks very happy and green.

@cobra: it is a Juniperus Chinensis, about 15 years old, which I bought in a nursery in 2016 - and had even less shape...
@crent89: yes you are right, it looks a bit top heavy. As far as the shape is concerned, in fact I have not been able yet to go for a much "sparser" vegetation or a more "cloud-like" pattern.
I am not convinced by the shape of the trunk itself, and there are four branches departing radially at the same level, which look unpleasant - although they provide a full layer of green pads. If I chopped one or two of them, the resulting shape would result non-balanced...
But it's just that I might lack the courage to dare a more aggressive pruning!
Thanks all for your comments!

i totally understand where you are coming from. till this day that to is a concern of mine and im sure it has put be behind of what some of my trees could have been by now but little by little ive gained more confidence in pruning.Ricky73 wrote: But it's just that I might lack the courage to dare a more aggressive pruning!

Hi all,
I post a new picture of my Juniper, wired and pruned again in the latest 2 weeks to get it more in shape.
It has a sparser foliage than last year... maybe I could have been even more aggressive but I feel I am going (gradually) in the right direction.
What do you think?
