Currently it's about 14 celsius max 4 celsius min, but it's a bit of a warm spell because it's rainy.
When it's clear the average max temp is about 8C and min -2C

Sounds like you can put this plant outside right away if you want to. Overall, the plant will do better come spring. During nights when frost is expected place it in a shed for the night for the next 6 weeks and the plant should have adjusted. (Plants do not really have a memory, and just respond to local conditions; So over a period of 4-6 weeks you can get a plant to adjust to colder circumstances, and trigger them into going i winter mode).

If you are concerned, you can of course bring it in every night that frost is expected untill spring. Considering your climate that will not be too often. But, as said in many threads, my chinese elms stay outside in all but the worst cold (Colder then -10 I might protect them). Mine has had some 9 nights of frost this season and is still growing (!)

I'm just a bit concerned because it has been kept in a heated environment for now, so I'm afraid it might get shocked if I put it outside.

Since the weather is currently relatively warm I suppose it could go outside, I imagine real sunlight will do it a world of good, and i can keep an eye on the weather for when the cold comes, and bring it in at night. The balcony is fairly sheltered, so it should be fine, and my potted yuzu trees* seem to be fine there too.

* proper trees, not bonsai, although I have been looking at them speculatively :D

I second leatherback. If tree would die from 10 degrees temp swings or sub zero temperatures. There would not be many trees in the world. Take some time to investigate the climate this species come from. You Will find that it does not differ much from your own.
