Hi all.
John from the Isle of Mull in Scotland here. I haven't posted before. I would appreciate any advice on how to proceed with this tree.
I had to remove this tree with a weeks notice last year, the ground was about to be cleared. . I assumed it was a Yew at the time.
I cut around the roots and chopped the tall trunk that was reaching for light as the tree was under taller trees. A week later I had to dig it up.
I planted it in an old bee hive lid and hoped it would survive. The leaves died off a few weeks later so I assumed I had killed it.
This spring it exploded with new growth and has been growing really well all summer. I then realised it wasn't a Yew at all and am fairly sure it's a Dawn redwood.
I plan to create a deadwood feature from the old main trunk and wire the new growth. The leaves haven't dropped yet this year despite a few mild frosts. I will put it in the greenhouse soon. Three pics attached of as collected last Autumn, Early summer and now.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers
John

The trunk is pretty impressive... I really can't tell from the pictures what the branches are like...
What are you winters like? I kept the two redwoods I have outside with some minor protection in the winter, and I live in Germany, near the southern Dutch boarder.

Thanks Tubaboy and Clicio.
I am on the west coast next to the sea so it is relatively mild here. We don't get any sun in December and January though so if the temperature drops below freezing it can stay that way for days. We haven't had anything below minus 5 for a few years. Our water supply can freeze.
The new shoots are so prolific I am finding it hard to see what I have branch wise too. I think I will post a picture in a few weeks when the leaves drop.
I have just finished the developing deciduous course so would like to try some of the carving techniques I saw.
