a specific amount is difficult to give, I know... just trying to get some ideas what I'm dealing with.. I'm going to try and asses if the tree really needs it...but it doesn't take on water too easily, and often more runs off the pot than gets into the soil.

Maybe you can do your first repot with someone who has done it before?

I may actually do that with this tree.

Do you remove a lot of the old soil? I've seen some repotting videos of larch bonsai, and some remove probably 60-70% of the old soil... I know it depends on what kind of soil the tree is in... and how fast, or if it breaks down etc..

For my larch the substrate comes off pretty much in full, but I am growing my plants in corase grit; cut the outer thin roots and a few shakes and 80% of the substrate is gone. I would not recomment taking an effort to remove most of the substrate, but rather, to keep the core mostly intact between repottings.

I guess I've been away for a while... I should post an update after the summer trim on this guy. repot went well... I will have to do some more cutting back in the winter, but I'm happy with how this tree has grown

So here's an update on this tree from a few weeks ago, when we had snow.. as you can see, I'm going for lb's suggestion.
