Went to Home Depot today just to get some shelves to put my trees on outside, and I swung by their nursery area, not really expecting to find much. I did however find this, at least from my newbie eyes, absolutely gorgeous trunk, bark and root system Japanese Boxwood. Every other plant they had there was basically just a bunch of tiny multiple trunks (though they did have a really nice Cypress, I dont think I'm ready to go cypress yet!) but when I saw this one hiding behind the rest I just had to have it. My other trees are a juniper (nana) and chinese elm, so I figure I'll add a third type into the mix and get my hands dirty learning on different species at once.
It already had roots that were starting to circle around the nursery pot, so I went ahead and moved it over to a same size pot but trimmed just a tiny bit of root that was wrapping. I didn't want to shock it too much, but I also wanted to get it out of that nursery soil that holds water so thickly and get it into some actual bonsai soil mix for better water drainage. Figured at the same time I might as well move all of my other trees too since they as well were in nursery pots/soil that was getting rather packed.

Nice find.
Think about opening up the foliage so it gets sun and air inside, and you will have to prune & wire it so it doesn't look like a round pompom forever.

Posted 5 years 8 months ago #48869After moving it to this nice pot I didnt want to really disturb it, plus it's already just about to enter the summer dormant period. I'm going to let it just chill in the pot as is until maybe January to do any pruning/wiring. Though if it would be better to try to prune it now before summer really kicks off I'm open to suggestions!Clicio wrote: Nice find.

Can't edit the post so have to reply, but is there a good in depth pruning guide? I'm new to horticulture in general and I'm never quite sure what exactly should be pruned when I look at something.
There's always some short "How to prune your tree" videos or websites, and they always say simple things like "Just prune it like you would normally prune it if it wasn't bonsai" or "prune so you get backbudding", but it doesn't explain why or where. Usually when people post videos or pictures, it's just some before picture, a "Here look we started pruning" that looks the same, and then a final "And we're done!" where the tree is practically bare.
A good example is Adam Ask's Why's boxwood styling post . His before and after down at the bottom just blows my mind, and I see the same in lots of videos. I never quite see what should be pruned. Sure, lots of interior branches I suppose, but from the after photos it always looks like people just trim everything

People prune everything unnecessary for the structure of the bonsai, but the essence stays there. It's easy to promote foliage, not so easy to replace a vital branch that was chopped off...
