What country are you in? where are you placing the plant? If you see "mites" then it could be too wet and you need to correct your watering regime.

Ok, now we know where you are. Your plant is hardy and must be outside all the time. In the winter if it gets very cold then in a cold unheated greenhouse. But not indoors. It is time for hard pruning and re potting. The plant will die because you are not giving the right conditions, the mites are not a problem, your culture is.
Water when just dry you need to check the soil every day and water when needed. Don;t water to a schedule.
The plant does not look like it is dying yet, if you change the way you are treating it then it will recover.

Also would be nice to know what kind of water you are using... I mean, Rhodondendron likes acidic soil. So, if your using water from your home tap to water your plant, chances are that this water might content elevated levels of lime. So, piece of advice: let the water rest for a whole day before watering your tree or filter it or use rain water (this last one is difficult to achieve...I know)
Oh...and good luck with your Rhodondendron...

Hi,
I know it is a bit late, but I have a theory: the 'brown knots' may have attracted the mites.

And ill change the tab water for rain water
