So i recently picked up an Acer palmatum KotoHime variety at a nearby nursery and it has been very healthy until about a week and a half ago i found that it had aphids. I remembered from childhood that my mom used to use ladybugs to kill the aphids on her roses but i could not find anyone selling them nearby. After some research i ended up misting a mixture of soap in water at a ratio of 1:50. This killed the aphids within a few days which i was happy about. However, a few days ago i noticed that many of the leaves were turning brown at the edges and some of the leaves were falling off. Could this be an effect of the soap?
I should mention that in many of the places that the leaves have fallen off, there are new sprouts already coming out. Are the leaves just being pushed off? All of the new growth is unaffected.

I should also mention that this tree is potted in ~60% pumice, ~20% potting soil ~20% perlite. It is watered daily and receives sun from 9am-1pm. It is fertilized with half strength miracle grow fertilizer at half strength every 10-14 days. The new growth is developing quickly in all areas and the leaves that are falling off were already on the tree when i got it about 3-4 weeks ago. the temperature has been between 60-80 F (15-25 C) and the tree has not received any rain.

You should only be watering if it needs it, not to a schedule. It is possible that the soap has affected the leaves, I have seen this happen, but they should recover, I think you may have used too strong a solution, it does not need much soap to get rid of the aphids. You will need to do it again as the eggs will not be killed by the soap.
I would not worry, it sounds as if the tree has reacted and dropped the leaves, the new ones will be smaller, it looks ok,
Geoff.
