Chinese Elm is losing all leaves after being left was created by Golfmad

Hello
I have an number of bonsai but I have a problem with one of them. About a week ago I removed the moss from around the base of the tree and this obviously exposed the soil. I forgot to water it for around 4 days just as we have had a number of hot days here in London. The soil dried up and now the leaves have gone crispy and are starting to fall off. I have made a number of cuts around the base and the top of the tree and it is showing bright green under the bark.

Just wondering what to do next, hopefully the tree recovers. Any idea how long to wait before the leaves start to come back? I keep all my trees outside by the way.

Thanks

All you can do at the moment is your normal watering regime and keep your fingers crossed. Sometimes you can get lucky and most of the tree will recover but from my experience quite a large portion will die. I have a silver birch that died but grew a new trunk from the base. There is at the moment a great big gnarly lump at the base which I will probably try to air layer new roots above. It also got attacked by sparrows this spring stripping most of the foliage. I think it must be jinxed
