I found a discarded 名媛直播. I tried to identify it but it doesn't quite fit the photos on this site. It has very few leaves scattered on mostly bare branches. The branches are long and have a gangly shape. I was wondering if I should do the defoliating I just read about? The tree was very dried out in the roots so I deep watered it with fertilizer water. Is this a tree I can save?
I'm hoping it just needs some love to thrive.
I'll appreciate any and all advice!

I wouldn't defoliate it, make sure the tree is Healthy, have you checked the roots? Make sure it isn't root bound or any root rot. Let the tree grow outside and hope for some good back budding. Could you post better pics of the tree

the plant you found is a chinese elm. And although the species is suitable for bonsai, currently it is just a stem with side branches.
Defoliating is a technique for very well-developed trees. Your plant in unhealthy, so you need to get it healthy before you do anything. So water regularly, making sure you do not get the soil overly wet, and do not let it dry out. Once you get growth, you can consider using a little fertiliser. For now, pick a spot with some morning sun, and keep the soil evenly moist. Don't do anything else.

Travi51,
Thank you for your help. I took the tree out of the pot. Even though yesterday I saturated the pot the roots were just barely damp. Which I guess is good since I have been reading more articles in here. This is my first bonsai. I guess the person that threw it away was disappointed in its spindly look. I took a few more pictures. I hope they are easier to see.
Leatherback identified it as a Chinese Elm. I will follow the advice from both of you and not defoliate and keep it damp in the sun and let it have a chance to get healthy.
I will keep you updated.
Thanks again!
Karen

Thank you Learherneck,
I posted some more pictures of my bonsai as Travi51 requested. I have moved it to the morning sun. I had already fertilized it yesterday when I found it all dried out. I won't add anymore fertilizer until my pictures to you both indicate that I should. I'm excited about having a bonsai to care for. Retiring from being a hospice nurse for 44 years doesn't make the need to help things get better go away!!! lol
Thanks again, Karen
