Well, I'm about to be THAT guy....... lol.
I'm very new to bonsai. I purchased one of those little Juniper Procumbens from a stand on the side of the road. It peaked my interest enough to do more research and try on my own. I bought a couple Nanas at Lowes to practice on but eventually wanted something bigger and more interesting. I bought this plant today at a nursery. The man said it was a Japanese Juniper. It was a little neglected and set aside. I think the yard cat might have used it as a bathroom.... lol. Anyway it had a neat shape and was bigger and pretty cheap. The foliage is more scale like as I have read on the identification page but it also has needle-like smaller foliage, much like the Procumbens I've been playing with. I just need to positively identify this tree before I do any further cleaning, thinning, shaping, or pitting. I have removed all the dead material and pinched or trimmed most of the foliage that hung down. Also, if anyone could guesstimate its age, I'd be grateful. Thank you for taking the time, any help is greatly appreciated.

Sometimes , when under stress , a scale juniper pushes out needle foliage as a defence mechanism against wildlife , it is referred to as juvenile foliage and it will become scale like again in time .
That's all I can give you , hope it helps , some more experienced member can maybe tell you more

Here's a few shots of the trunk and a close up of the mixed foliage. I am located the the panhandle of Florida in the US. It almost seems like a Chinese Juniper, but I'd like to know for sure so I can research proper pruning and potting requirements before I go any further. Thank you!

The pruning techniques for scale type junipers are not different, as far as I know, so you can follow the guidelines for a chinese juniper.
