Maybe the best thing to tell someone who has no idea what bonsai is is not to tell them what wrong with their tree but to tell them what it should be ( a representation of a tree in nature ) and then things like reverse taper or in proper branching will be corrected when needed . I agree with Auk , there is no point in advising a trunk chop or air layer if then the OP will create an s shape all over again and I think the best way is to be straight forward and say what it is , because it took time for me to understand what a bonsai should really look like even when people where telling me that the twigs I was working with would never make bonsai so I think if they sugar coated it and told me I was doing a good job it would have took even longer .

I didn't sugar coated anything and I didn't advise the OP to chop the trunk; I said for one to correct reverse taper (in general), chopping the trunk or air layering can be a solution.
But I see your point: I agree that will never be a good bonsai, no matter what.
But... There are many ways of saying that, besides one liners.

I guess I am being unclear.
What I am trying to say:
The OP has purchased a mallsai and does not know what type of plant it is.
Obviously, the OP has no experience in bonsai at all (and probably is interested in bonsai on a whole other level than we are).
Discussing a trunk chop just makes no sense. The only thing the OP needs to know now is how to keep the plant alive.
