There are a few ways of watering, you could fill a try with water and stick the plant and pot in the tray and wait until you see the top soil get wet, the soil will suck up the water from the tray. Or use a watering can and water the top until the water comes out the bottom and stop after a few seconds, bonsai should be kept out side depending on the species year round and watered daily depending on your location maybe even more.

This is not true. You are not supposed to stop watering when you see water coming out the bottom. Heck, if I did that, my trees would be dry as hell, since my soil mixture is almost all pumice. You water thoroughly with a watering can, don't do the "immersion" technique. Simply water with your can, make sure you get all soil wet, you shouldn't worry about watering too much. It is impossible to overwater if your soil has very good drainage.

Using the immersion technique is never wrong. Iv uesd it a few times and your right don't stop after it runs through the pot but it also depends on what soil mixture your using to.

Is there a way to save it or should I just give up and find a new one?

You should only give up when it is absolutely, totally dead. As long as there? hope, continue to give it proper care, even if the chances are slim.

Without pictures it is really hard to judge the actual state of things. I would think your with green leaves has a chance of live. BUT.. Considering it has gotten to where it is now under your care, I doubt you will be able to save it. It needs almost intuitive prper care when in this state. It is virtually impossible to explain what to do. Yet if you put it on a bench of a person who knows this species and/or plant care well, it may cme back.

(Anecdote.. A club member passed away this winter. He had a field of maples for growing out. Most just 2 year old cuttings. Everyone got one of the saplings to follow through the years. Spring comes and they start leafing out. All except for one. Sothe member keeps bringing th maple, which just grow a few mm, has 4 sad looking leaves etc. All give advice, but every time again, the tree is just holding still. Then, a few weeks ago, someone decided to take the tree home. Home, this person did everything recommended before too. Insppected the roots. The soil was horrible, roots were not growing: He repottted the plant. He placed the plant under a tree in the garden. Within days (!) the tree started growing. It now has a big mass of leaves, and this weekend the tree will go back to the owner.).

Lesson: It is not just the tree. It is the right care too. And even when told what to do, you need to know what you are looking for. So.. Without pictures it is impossible. But even with pictures, you might need to find someone near you, who has experience with this species and help you out for a bit if you want to save it.
