Hello,
I've been reading some information around the web, but couldn't get answers on some specific steps.
My neighbour came the other day and said he had leftover pine seedlings and gave them to us - a box of 100 to be exact. It should be scots pine . I'm going to plant some in the ground for future projects, but I was wondering if I should already worry about restricting taproot growth with a barrier in the ground as is shown in various guides? Or are these plants still too young and I should just let them grow for a few years and then start trimming the roots to create a good nebari?
My second question would be regarding bird cherry trees. Do these make usable bonsai? I haven't found much info about this particular species, usually Google just directs me to other cherry types. I'm asking because I was looking around and there's an abundance of them right next to my house. There are small saplings for replanting and later use. Then some older ones about the thickness of a thumb; I even found fallen older trees that still grow green buds at the ends to get cuttings from. I'm not sure if this is a plant that would back bud and particularly the "middle" ones tend to be just 2 m long thin trunks with no taper to speak of so not sure if these are usable. Not expecting them to be ready bonsai of course, but just a starting material for at least trunk growth practice.
That's it for now.
