So I recently bought a tree to bonsai and I'm new to the whole thing so any suggestions or comments would be great. I put it in a bigger pot to grow in for rink size but I heard putting it in the ground works better, but I don't want to do that and mess it up. Also I don't know where to start cutting branches to make it look better, any thoughts

In the ground is the best thing for it and it won't mess it up it will only get better

Is the OP' s tree a graft...the bark changes dramatically at the base.

Think about what your long term vision for this tree is.If you plant it in the ground as it is now, your only real options later on are a serious trunk chop and air layering. Everything in bonsai is done with a reason, and ideally a vision for the future. Just putting it in the ground will give you a tall tree in 5 years time, with bad roots, and a big cut which will require another 5 to heal.
