Black/dark brown spots on Golden Gate Ficus leaves was created by BHamer
Posted 7 years 8 months ago #31838Hi All,
I have a brief question on a situation that I am confident someone on here will have encountered before. I have successfully cared for a Chinese elm for about 2 years, and recently decided to get another tree. I now have a Golden Gate Ficus that I received it in the mail about a week ago. I un-boxed it that day and kept it out of direct sunlight for about 24 hours so it wouldn't be to much of a shock. After that point I gave it a thorough watering and placed it by a window that faces south-east, so it gets a lot of direct sunlight.
I noticed after about 4-5 days that the some of the leaves have started to develop what appear to be black scorch spots on them (photos 1-4). The tree looked otherwise healthy, so I suspected that the spots are due to the sudden change in environment from being shipped, and from a bit too much direct sunlight from the window placement. However, I then noticed that they also developed little white spots on them (photos 5-6). I am a bit worried that this could be a fungal infection, so I wanted to upload some photos ASAP to get peoples' opinions and hear recommended next steps. I am hoping to nip this in the bud before it is too far gone to salvage.
Any thoughts and advice are welcome. Please let me know, and thank you all!

Hi BHamer and welcome to forum.
This could be sun burns but not too sure. Wait for more feedback. Would advise to pinch out all these not good looking leaves as first step.

Yup. Just like humans, plants get sunburn if placed in full sun if they are not used to. Not a big deal. It will grow new leaves that are better adjysted to high levels of light. I personally would leave them on.

About the spots on photo 5 and 6 I'm pretty sure they are normal on that type of ficus

My mother's ficus has had that in the past and it never seems to bother the plant much, her tree is watered well sprayed with fungicides every so often and it does not get too little sun or too much sun but the blemishes on the leaves keep coming back its a mystery. Lol
