I've never done any bonsai or any horticulture for that matter, but I'd like to try my hand at this tree. I've attempted to more specifically identify the tree, but the leaves don't appear to match any other common species I've seen. Any ideas on what it is and what I should do to start taking care of it?
That's a juniper. It's a young plant that cannot be considered a bonsai yet. This is NOT an indoor tree, it needs to be outdoors.
I think I see some scale-type foliage, but most of the foliage is the juvenile, needle type.

I actually recommend removing it.

I recommend to leave it alone. First you need to learn how to take for it, to keep it alive, and to let it grow.
