Hi Everyone
I have grown Oak trees from acorn 8 in total. They are 5 years old and range from 100mm too 500mm in hight all grown in pots . I would like some hints on how to get a thicker trunk on the larger trees please. They have not been pruned at all so wondering when is best to prune the roots and the tree itself.

Hi, My friend is growing some oak trees from seed too and I obtained a five year old oak and a 12 year old oak. I am looking to plant the five year old and 12 year old oak in the ground.
So first grow in the ground, it will sometimes take a year to establish itself and then you can expect big growth.
More foilage = thicker trunk. You have to be patient and just let it grow. If the ground is not suitable then pot up to a larger pot gradually as the roots need space but not too much space to grow. I know you want to get on with the hobby but take your time or obtain a larger tree where it will be ready for the root prune and the tree itself.
That's what I think you should do.

Thanks for your view. I do hope to keep the smaller ones very small but I hope to grow the larger on to about 900mm. By the way any idea on how big a pot for a tree of that size

That's ok. I would've thought that a good garden centre would do lots of different sizes but for your case I would have thought a 7cm square pot to start off with then as and when the roots fill up you can slip pot it into the next size up (9cm) when the roots and the tree grow. The reason why you don't want to go for too big a pot is because the roots will not grow into saturated wet soil around the edges of the pot. By going up slowly it ensures that you will get maximum growth for that period of time. You may want to research air pots. They are now being used in some nurseries. Joining a club would also help as you can get hands on straight away following advice from members. Best of luck

I guess they are doing well in those pots so just keep on doing what you're doing.
Well done :)
