Chinese Elm Questions was created by mattster97

Hello everyone,
I have a Chinese Elm (which I'm pretty positive isn't a Zelkova) that is a bit confusing since it is my first bonsai. Some of the smaller leaves are curling and turning brown while recently there are also new growths with both larger and smaller leaves. I'm afraid that the soil is too organic, and I am a bit clueless if the tree is capable of or needing to be repotted. A small mushroom just decided to sprout up and die within a day as well. I would like to think that the tree is getting enough light, but if you guys disagree, I do plan on moving it outside mid-June (slowly so that it can adjust) for more light. I am attempting to use the chopstick method for watering. If you all have any advice or explanations for the dying leaves and the mushroom, I would for sure appreciate it. Thanks again.

Leaves die and fall off. That is normal. Especially if you do not allow a tree to follow the normal pattern where it drops all the leaves in fall, and stays dormant untill spring. Ideally you should keep trees outside yearround.
This plant is getting too little light. You can tell by the big space between the leaves: The more space between leaves, the darker it is.
Chinese elms get increasingly large leaves on branches, which is why people with mature well-developed trees trim back to two leaves: These are the smallest.

You are right. Chinese elm and zelkova are two different Species.

I agree with leatherback, you should place it outside. the soil looks coarse with rocks so it doesnt look too organic. It might need repotting if its been in that pot for more than 2 years. But, elms are outdoor trees and since it was inside for winter, it didnt do through a dormant period, so it will drop leaves as new shoots push out. Give it plenty of sunlight, but shield it from intense summer sun. Once all the leaves drop off in winter, place in your garage or basement. Trees without leaves need no sun. I have 2 Zelkovas which are similar to elms, which i keep outside year round.

Thanks for the input everyone. I plan on moving it outside as soon as possible. Does anyone know if the mushroom is harmful or a sign of anything? Thanks again.
